TOP 5 BENEFITS FOR LOCAL AUTHORITIES

5 key reasons to implement the Local Directgov Programme:

Increased Take Up of Local Authority Online Services

Help Local Authorities Meet Efficiency Targets and Priority Outcomes

Improved Public Awareness of Local Authority Services

Increased Customer Satisfaction and Reduced Frustration

Reduced Local Authority Costs

OUR OBJECTIVES

To improve accessibility to public services via the Internet by bringing together Directgov and Local Authority online services into a single offering:
www.direct.gov.uk
We are collecting data for priority services by 9 December 2005 and for a further set of services by 17 March 2006.

Increased Take Up of Local Authority Online Services

Customers will be routed from the Directgov website to the most relevant web page on the Local Authority website - this can significantly increase the take-up of Local Authority services. It is not a replacement for Local Authority websites, but rather exists to complement and extend the reach of these online services.

Help Local Authorities Meet Efficiency Targets and Priority Outcomes

R3: One stop direct access and deep linking to joined up A-Z information on all Local Authority services via website or shared telephone contact centre using the recognised taxonomy of the Local Government Category List (LGCL). It will deliver improved content relating to Local Authority services on the Directgov website, providing the customer with more information at the first point of contact. It will reduce confusion as to which tier of government provides the service, and will offer improved online experience by routeing customers to the appropriate web page.

R26: Monitoring performance of corporate website, or regional web portal, between 2003/04 and 2005/06, in order to demonstrate rising and sustained use, as measured by industry standards including page impressions and unique users. It will route Directgov users to the best available web page on the Local Authority website. It will help to increase the take up of Local Authority online services through directing users to the Local Authority site, therefore helping the Local Authority to achieve rising and sustained use.

G2: Empowering and supporting local organisations, community groups and clubs to create and maintain their own information online, including the promotion of job vacancies and events. Project 2 of the Local Directgov Programme involves providing guidance and support to help Neighbourhoods and Parish Councils to develop a web presence. It will do this by adding extra sections to the Environment and Community Online Residents E-Services (ENCORE) e-Community Publish System to enhance functionality. Local Authorities can host these websites and, as such, this contributes to the Local Authority empowering local organisations to maintain their own information online.

E3: Agreed baseline and targets for e-participation activities, including targets for citizen satisfaction. It can help Local Authorities meet targets for customer satisfaction by improving the customer journey and reducing frustration of the citizen through the seamless Local Directgov service.

Improved Public Awareness of Local Authority Services

It will route users from Directgov to the best available web page on the Local Authority website, with the aim of encouraging citizens to use Local Authority services online.

Increased Customer Satisfaction and Reduced Frustration

It will simplify government for the citizen by providing a seamless service and giving an additional service-led access point to Local Authority information and transactions. It aims to reduce the frustration of dealing with multiple government information sources.

Reduced Local Authority Costs

Online service transactions are significantly cheaper than face-to-face, or even call centre, services thus creating an opportunity to make cost savings through channel switch.
